Adipine MR 10mg

Adipine MR, containing the active ingredient nifedipine, a calcium antagonist, is used to treat high blood pressure and angina (chest pain). For high blood pressure, it works by relaxing and expanding blood vessels, making blood flow more easily and lowering blood pressure. This reduces strain on the heart. For angina, it relaxes and expands the arteries supplying the heart, allowing more blood and oxygen to reach it, thus decreasing strain, and reducing the severity and frequency of  angina attacks.

Do not take Adipine MR if you are allergic to the active substance, any other similar medicines (known as dihydropyridines),or any of the other ingredients listed in section 6 of the Patient Information Leaflet. Avoid it if you’ve had a heart attack within the last month, experience a sudden angina attack (as Adipine MR will not quickly relieve symptoms), have unstable angina, or are taking rifampicin, an antibiotic. Additionally, refrain from using Adipine MR if you have been diagnosed with narrowing of the aortic heart valve (stenosis), have experienced collapse due to a heart problem (cardiogenic shock) characterised by breathlessness, paleness, cold sweats, and dry mouth, if your blood pressure continues to rise despite treatment (malignant hypertension), or if you’ve been advised to avoid lactose due to conditions like hereditary lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Adipine MR can be taken with or without food. However, it’s important not to consume grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking Adipine MR. Avoid starting Adipine MR within 3 days of consuming grapefruit juice or grapefruit and inform your doctor if you have consumed any during this time frame. Grapefruit juice is known to increase the blood levels of the active ingredient, nifedipine, and this effect can last for at least 3 days.

If you are, pregnant, breastfeeding, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, it’s crucial to consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. Adipine MR may be suitable for use during pregnancy, but only after special consideration and agreement by your doctor. However, if you are breastfeeding, do not take Adipine MR. If you need to take it, you should cease breastfeeding before starting the tablets.

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Serious side effects include severe, sudden generalised allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, drop in blood pressure, fast pulse, and swelling, including potentially life-threatening swelling of the airway. Other serious reactions may include fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, mild to moderate allergic reactions, itching, rash, or hives. If you experience any of these, contact your doctor immediately as they may be signs of an allergic reaction that could become severe. Additionally, if you develop a skin reaction, blistering, peeling of the skin, or mucosal reactions (in the mouth/nose or at the penis/vagina), contact your doctor immediately before continuing treatment as these may be signs of a severe reaction. Less serious side effects may include headache, flushing, general feeling of being unwell, constipation, and swelling, particularly of the ankles and legs. Uncommon side effects may include stomach pain, unspecified pain, chills, low blood pressure when standing up, fainting, irregular heartbeat, and palpitations. For a full list of side effects refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
