Jardiance is an oral anti-diabetic, used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Jardiance works by blocking the reabsorption of glucose by the kidneys, resulting in increased glucose excretion in the urine, and ultimately lowering blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. The active ingredient in Jardiance is Empagliflozin.
Those with type 2 diabetes have pancreas’ that do not make enough insulin, or their bodies simply aren’t able to use it properly. Because insulin is linked to the level of sugar in your blood, diabetic people end up with a much higher amount, which Jardiance works to remove from your body through your urine.
Jardiance belongs to a group of medicines known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Other, similar, type 2 diabetes medicines are available on Meds for Less, such Forxiga (dapagliflozin), you can Bu Forxiga tablets at Meds for Less.
Diabetes is a lifelong illness, although type 2 often doesn’t develop until later in life and is linked to being overweight or inactive. Symptoms can include excessive thirst, frequent urination and extreme tiredness or fatigue.
It’s important to manage the disease, as it can cause serious health problems with your eyes, heart and nervous system, and Jardiance will help you do this.
Jardiance tablets are prescription-only. Always follow the advice of your doctor and read the patient information leaflet (PILs) provided in the medication packet.
Take the tablets by swallowing whole with a drink of water, with or without food. You can take it at any time of day, however keeping your chosen time consistent will help you remember to take it.
Jardiance contains the active ingredient empagliflozin, in strengths of either 10mg or 25mg tablets.
The normal starting dose is 10mg a day, which will likely go up to 25mg per day if your doctor thinks you need it. However, you may be asked to stay on the lower dose if you have a problem with your kidneys.
If you forget to take your Jardiance tablet then you should take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s more than 12 hours late. In this case, you should skip the forgotten dose and move straight onto the next one, as you should never take a double dose.
If you take more Jardiance than you should, then go to your doctor or nearest emergency department immediately.
Jardiance is not suitable for everyone. You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to empagliflozin or any of the other ingredients in the tablets.
This medication is not recommended for people with type 1 diabetes, severe kidney disease, or those who are breastfeeding. Caution is also required in older adults, particularly those aged 75 and over, due to an increased risk of dehydration and kidney-related side effects when using tablet Jardiance 25 mg.

Like with all diabetic patients (regardless of treatment), you should also check your feet regularly and follow the foot care advice given by your doctor.
If you are pregnant or planning to have a baby then you should speak to your doctor before starting treatment with Jardiance, as it’s not known whether or not it has harmful effects on your unborn baby.
Even when taking this medicine, you will still need to follow a diet and exercise plan in order to keep your diabetes well-managed. Always follow the advice of your doctor, pharmacist or nurse and contact them if you are unsure.
The most common Jardiance side effects include:
If you do experience one or more of these side effects and they persist or worsen, then inform your doctor right away. Although fairly common, side effects such as overly low blood sugar levels, serious dehydration and urinary tract infection can be serious and so you should contact your doctor immediately if you notice signs of any of these.
Jardiance may interact with certain medicines, which can affect how well it works or increase the risk of side effects. Particular caution is needed when it is taken alongside diuretics (water tablets), as this may increase the risk of dehydration or low blood pressure.
Other medicines that lower blood sugar levels, such as insulin or sulphonylureas, may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia when used together with a Jardiance tablet. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose or monitor your blood sugar levels more closely.
Always inform your healthcare professional about all medicines you are taking, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements, before starting treatment.
If you take more Jardiance tablets than prescribed, contact your doctor, pharmacist, or nearest emergency department immediately. Taking too much Jardiance may increase the risk of dehydration, low blood pressure, dizziness, or changes in kidney function.
If you feel unwell after taking more than the recommended dose, including Jardiance 25 mg tablets, seek medical advice straight away and take the medication packaging with you so healthcare professionals know what you have taken.
