Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that affects sleep control. As a result, patients suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness that interferes with daily activities, episodes of falling asleep uncontrollably (at random times), and sleep paralysis.
A sudden loss of muscle tone can also cause feelings of weakness and slurred speech. Hallucinations (which can be extremely frequent and vivid), memory loss, mental fogginess, inability to focus, fatigue, and depression are also reported by Narcolepsy sufferers.
Usually, narcolepsy develops between 15 and 25, but it can affect anyone. The number of people affected by this condition is unclear, since most cases go unreported. However, it is believed to be equally prevalent among men and women.

Treatment for narcolepsy should include medication as well as lifestyle changes. You should also avoid alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine, as well as heavy meals. Getting into a routine by keeping a sleeping schedule (including short daytime naps), exercising regularly, and eating regularly is a good idea.
