What Is Flixotide and How Does It Work?

The flixotide inhaler is a type of ‘preventer’ inhaler used in the management of asthma and in some cases of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD). It contains a corticosteroid called fluticasone which helps to tackle airway inflammation to reduce symptoms of asthma/COPD.

Usually associated with the treatment of asthma flixotide (or Fluticasone) is a type of inhaler that is more of a “preventer” type of inhaler rather than a “reliever”. It can also be used in some people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD). This inhaler contains a corticosteroid, specifically fluticasone propionate. As the medication is inhaled, it can go directly to the affected area. Corticosteroids work as an ‘anti-inflammatory’ medication; in asthma corticosteroids can help decrease the inflammation of the airways which helps control symptoms such as wheeze or prevent asthma attacks. Unlike the Ventolin (or Salbutamol) inhaler, Flixotide is not an “as needed” or “reliever” type of inhaler to manage sudden symptoms of asthma problems notably difficulty breathing.

Main Benefits of Flixotide Inhaler

Flixotide (or fluticasone) inhalers can be an important part of someone’s long-term management plan of asthma or COPD alongside Ventolin (or Salbutamol) inhalers. This is because of the anti-inflammatory effect of the corticosteroids in asthma preventers flixotide which can help reduce the occurrence of asthma attacks and control symptoms such as wheezing. Also, depending on personal preferences, you can also get the Flixotide inhaler in the Evohaler or Accuhaler form. Here at Medsforless the flixotide evohaler price and the accuhaler price are the same.

Who Can Use Flixotide?

Flixotide (or fluticasone) inhalers can be used by children above the age of 4 and most adults. Using asthma inhaler flixotide in a nebuliser needs to be monitored by a doctor if the user is a child but most adults do not need medical monitoring for using Flixotide in a nebuliser. However, some people may not be suited to using Flixotide so it is important to consult a doctor when considering Flixotide inhalers. Certain conditions where Flixotide use may not be safe or may need to be modified include: pregnancy, past medical history of tuberculosis (TB), or if you have a condition where you are taking other corticosteroid medications.

How to Use Flixotide Properly

There are two main types of Flixotide inhaler: Evohaler and Accuhaler. The Evohaler is the ‘classic’ inhaler shaped like an ‘L’ with a button on the top that releases the medication in the form of a spray. The Accuhaler is the circular-looking one where you inhale medication in the form of dry powder.

Both the Evohaler and Accuhaler Flixotide inhaler act as a “preventer” inhaler in the same way but have small differences in the dosage and how it is activated.

  • Sit up straight and remove the cap (Evohaler) or open the slider (Accuhaler). Make sure the mouthpiece is clean then shake the inhaler a few times.
  • Breathe out and put your mouth over the mouthpiece:
    • For the Evohaler: You should be holding the inhaler with your thumb at the bottom and the fingers on the top. Put your mouth over the mouthpiece. As you take a deep breath in, press down the top of the inhaler down to release a puff of the fluticasone. Hold the breath for 10 seconds
    • For the Accuhaler: put your mouth over the mouthpiece and take a deep breathe in
  • Move the inhaler away and breathe out. Wait around 30 seconds before you take another puff if needed.

Overall, the steps are very similar but check the leaflet in the package when you first use it. The number of puffs you take and how many times a day will depend on how severe your asthma is and what kind of inhaler you use, so you should take it according to your doctor’s instructions.

Flixotide Dosage and Administration

The Flixotide inhaler (Evohaler or Accuhaler) can come in a range of doses (such as flixotide 250 mg) so different pharmacies may offer different versions and the flixotide cost may vary. Possible Side Effects and Warnings

There are some common side effects associated with Flixotide (fluticasone) inhaler such as:

  • Oral thrush – Oral thrush is a yeast infection that occurs around the mouth. You can reduce the risk of this by improving oral hygiene such as brushing your teeth after using the inhaler. If you do get a yeast infection around your mouth you can consult a pharmacist who may recommend a mouth gel/solution to treat the infection.
  • Sore throat or hoarseness – Using a spacer might help reduce these side effects. Rinsing your mouth or brushing your teeth after using the inhaler would also help minimise the feeling of dryness.

If these effects persist or start to interfere with your daily life, please consult a medical professional.

Some serious side effects include:

  • Cushing’s syndrome from long-term use of steroids
  • Adrenal gland problems
  • Anaphylaxis (serious allergic reaction)

Flixotide Evohaler’s active ingredient (fluticasone propionate) belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which are also known as steroids. Steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, which means they reduce irritation and swelling in the airways, making breathing problems like asthma easier to manage.

Effectiveness

Flixotide Evohaler, when used daily, can help prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms like wheezing or a nighttime cough. In a few days, you should notice a difference. Flixotide Evohaler does not immediately help control asthma.

In the event of a sudden breathing problem, you should have a reliever inhaler on hand, such as Ventolin (salbutamol).

Correct inhaler use

When using your inhaler, stand or sit up straight. Remove the mouthpiece cover and inspect the inside for cleanliness. Shake the inhaler 4-5 times before using.

Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and fingers on the top, forming a C shape with your hand. Exhale as far as you feel comfortable, then place the mouthpiece between your teeth in your mouth. Avoid biting it by closing your lips around it.

Inhale through your mouth, then press down on the top of the canister to release a puff of medicine just as you begin to inhale. Continue to inhale slowly and deeply. Take a deep breath and hold it for as long as you feel comfortable.

After 30 seconds, repeat the process to take another puff. After each use, replace the mouthpiece cover.

Side effects

It can irritate the throat or cause thrush in the mouth.

Using a spacer device with your inhaler can help reduce the risk of these side effects. Brushing your teeth, gargling, and/or rinsing your mouth with water after each use can also help.

See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects. If you have any concerns about side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.

Taking other medicines with Flixotide Evohaler

Flixotide should be safe to take with other medications. However, it’s critical that you tell us about any prescription, over-the-counter, or recreational medications you’re taking so that we can safely prescribe Flixotide.

Our doctors will not be able to prescribe Flixotide Evohaler to you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have ever needed intensive care treatment for your asthma, or if you have been admitted to the hospital because of your symptoms in the previous year.

Flixotide (or fluticasone) inhalers are typically used to treat asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder.

You should start to notice an improvement in your symptoms after using Flixotide for a few days.

Flixotide is a ‘preventer’ inhaler rather than a ‘reliever’ like Ventolin. Flixotide cannot control breathing problems immediately in the event of an asthma attack.

Common side effects include sore throat and oral thrush.

Yes, generally for people who need Flixotide, the benefits of the inhaler outweigh the risks and is safe to use long-term. You will still need regular monitoring by a doctor.
