What Is Seretide and How Does It Work?

Seretide inhalers are often used in the treatment of asthma. The dual action provided by its two main ingredients: Salmeterol and Fluticasone propionate allow for effective relief and treatment of asthma symptoms such as breathlessness or wheeze. Here we discuss some commonly asked questions about seretide evohaler or accuhaler and give you an overview of how it works.

While the seretide inhaler is often used in the treatment of asthma, it can also be used for Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disorder in some cases. For a bit of background, the symptoms in asthma are caused by constriction or narrowing of the airways as well as airway inflammation. Therefore, to help relieve and treat these symptoms, Seretide contains salmeterol and fluticasone propionate:

  • Salmeterol relaxes the muscle in the airways, this widens them and allows for air to go in and out more easily. This helps to relieve symptoms of breathlessness.
  • Fluticasone propionate is a corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation (e.g swelling and irritation) in the airways.

The combination of the two medications in Seretide means that this inhaler is both a ‘preventer’ and ‘reliever’. This means it can help treat and prevent asthma symptoms at the same time.

Conditions Treated with Seretide Inhalers

Although Seretide inhalers are typically used to treat asthma, in some cases it can also be used in the management of Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disorder (COPD). However, its suitability for managing COPD will depend on your individual situation and condition so you should consult your doctor before buying Seretide for COPD.

How to Use the Seretide Inhaler Correctly

It is very important to make sure your seretide inhaler technique is good or else the medication will not reach the affected areas and the treatment will not bring you any benefits. To refresh your memory, here is a step by step guide on how to use the seretide inhaler correctly:

  1. Take off the mouthpiece covering and check that the inside is clean.
  2. Stand up or sit up straight.
  3. Shake the inhaler a few times. Placing your thumb at the base, hold the inhaler with your hand in a ‘C-shape’ with two fingers on top of the canister.
  4. Breathe in and then breathe out as much as you can. Put your lips over the mouthpiece so it is fully covered.
  5. Breathe in again deeply through your mouth. Just after you start breathing in, press the inhaler down.
  6. Hold your breath and move the inhaler away. Keep holding your breath for as long as is comfortable to let the medication settle in.
  7. Wait 30 seconds before the next puff.
  8. Wipe the mouthpiece clean and cover it when you are done. You should hear it click if you have put the cover back on correctly.

Make sure to rinse out your mouth with water and spit it out each time after you use the inhaler. Maintaining good oral hygiene is important as you are at increased risk of developing thrush when using the seretide inhaler.

Dosage Guidelines and Treatment Duration

Seretide inhalers can be used for asthma and COPD so the doses and treatment plan vary from person to person. Usually you will take one or two puffs in the morning and the evening. You should follow the dosage guidelines and treatment duration recommended by your doctor as seretide inhalers are a prescription-only medication. In each metered dose of seretide 25mcg is salmeterol combined with a dose of fluticasone propionate. This can vary but a common composition is the seretide 25 50 evohaler.

Generally, you would be put on the lowest dose that is able to control your symptoms. Here is a general overview of the common doses and price of seretide here at Medsforless for your reference:

Please see the patient information leaflet for the full list of side effects. If you are concerned about any side effects that have occurred since starting Seretide, please consult your healthcare provider.

Who Should Not Use Seretide?

In some cases, Seretide may not be safe or suitable for you. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or you take any regular medication, please consult a doctor before using Seretide. Some examples of when Seretide may not be suitable include:

  • if you have problems with your heart such as an irregular heart rhythm
  • if you are trying to get pregnant, you are pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • if you have tuberculosis
  • if you had a previous allergic reaction to Seretide or corticosteroids

Seretide Evohaler is a reliever and a preventer at the same time. Salmeterol and fluticasone propionate are the active ingredients.

Salmeterol is a bronchodilator that works for a long time. Bronchodilators are medications that relax the muscles in the lungs and widen the airways, making breathing easier.

Fluticasone propionate belongs to the corticosteroid class of medications, which are also known as steroids. Steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, which means they reduce irritation and swelling in the airways, making breathing problems like asthma easier to manage.

Effectiveness

The Seretide Evohaler immediately aids in breathing control.

Seretide Evohaler, when used on a daily basis, can help prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms like wheezing or a nighttime cough. In a few days, you should notice a difference.

In the event of a sudden breathing problem, you should have a reliever inhaler on hand, such as Ventolin (salbutamol).

Correct inhaler use

When using your inhaler, stand or sit up straight. Remove the mouthpiece cover and inspect the inside for cleanliness. Shake the inhaler 4-5 times before using.

Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and fingers on the top, forming a C shape with your hand. Exhale as far as you feel comfortable, then place the mouthpiece between your teeth in your mouth. Avoid biting it by closing your lips around it.

Inhale through your mouth, then press down on the top of the canister to release a puff of medicine just as you begin to inhale. Continue to inhale slowly and deeply. Take a deep breath and hold it for as long as you feel comfortable.

After 30 seconds, repeat the process to take another puff. After each use, replace the mouthpiece cover.

Side effects

It can irritate the throat or cause thrush in the mouth. Brushing your teeth, gargling, and/or rinsing your mouth with water after each use can all help.

When using Seretide Evohaler, some people experience headaches, muscle pain, and aching joints.

See the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects. If you have any concerns about side effects, please contact us through your Patient Record.

Safety: taking other medicines

Seretide Evohaler should be safe to take with other medications. However, it’s critical that you tell us about any prescription, over-the-counter, or recreational medications you’re taking so that we can safely prescribe Seretide Evohaler.

We will not be able to prescribe Seretide Evohaler to you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have ever needed intensive care treatment for your asthma, or if you have been admitted to hospital because of your symptoms in the previous year.

Yes and no. Seretide contains a steroid which we generally avoid using very long-term if possible. This is because it can increase the risk of restricted growth in children or give you side effects like weakened bones. Your doctor should review your symptom management and change inhalers or dosage where appropriate.

The only difference is in the mode of administration. With the Evohaler, you press down and it releases a spray that you breathe in. The Accuhaler is the circular-looking inhaler where the medication comes in the form of dry powder that you inhale.

Unless your doctor has told you to, you should not use Seretide with other inhalers as it may lead to side effects.

You can buy seretide online from many online pharmacies in the UK. It is a prescription medication so you will likely be asked to complete a consultation first. Prices may vary but the seretide evohaler 25 50 price at Medsforless is £39.45.
